What Is Baptism?

Baptism is one of the most significant public declarations a follower of Jesus can make. It is an outward expression of an inward transformation — a public announcement that says: "I have trusted Jesus Christ with my life, and I am now living as part of His people."

In most churches, baptism by immersion is practised — where the person being baptised is briefly submerged in water. The act symbolises dying to the old life and rising to new life in Christ, as described in Romans 6:3–4.

Who Gets Baptised?

Baptism is for anyone who has made a personal decision to follow Jesus. At The Epic Church, we celebrate baptisms for people of all ages — teenagers making their own faith decisions, adults who are new to faith, and those who have been believers for years but never taken this step. It is never too late to be baptised.

What Happens During a Baptism Service?

While every church does things slightly differently, here's a general outline of what you can expect:

  1. Worship and Celebration — The service typically begins with the whole congregation worshipping together. Baptism Sunday is a joyful occasion.
  2. A Short Explanation — A pastor or leader will briefly explain the meaning of baptism and its biblical foundation for the benefit of all guests present.
  3. Personal Testimonies — Often, the person being baptised shares a brief testimony: who they were before faith, how they came to follow Jesus, and how their life has changed.
  4. The Baptism Itself — The individual enters the water (a baptismal pool, a river, or another body of water), answers an affirmation of faith, and is immersed and raised up again.
  5. Applause and Community Response — The congregation celebrates! Baptism is a communal moment, and it is entirely appropriate to cheer, clap, and even shed a few happy tears.

What Should I Wear or Bring as a Guest?

As a guest attending to support someone being baptised, you simply dress comfortably for a church service. No special preparation is required. If you are being baptised yourself, the church will advise you to wear comfortable clothes you don't mind getting wet — many churches provide baptism robes or suggest dark-coloured clothing.

How Can I Support Someone Who Is Being Baptised?

  • Show up — Your presence means more than you know. Having loved ones in the room is deeply meaningful for the person being baptised.
  • Celebrate openly — Don't be afraid to clap, cheer, and express joy. This is a moment worth celebrating.
  • Write a note — A card or a heartfelt message after the service is a beautiful way to mark the occasion.
  • Ask about their story — If you're not a believer yourself, a baptism is a natural, low-pressure moment to ask your friend or family member what their faith means to them.
