Why Prayer Feels Hard

Most followers of Jesus know they should pray. Many genuinely want to pray. Yet consistent daily prayer remains one of the most challenging disciplines in the Christian life. Distraction, busyness, a sense of unworthiness, or simply not knowing what to say can all get in the way.

Start Smaller Than You Think You Should

One of the biggest reasons people abandon new habits is starting too big. Instead of committing to a one-hour prayer time immediately, start with five focused minutes. Five minutes of genuine, attentive prayer is far more formative than an hour of distracted ritual.

As the habit forms, the time naturally expands. Don't despise small beginnings — Jesus praised the woman who gave her two small coins over those who gave impressive amounts.

Choose a Consistent Time and Place

Habits are anchored to cues. When you pray at the same time and in the same place each day, your mind and heart begin to associate that moment with entering God's presence. Common effective times include:

  • Early morning — before the day's demands crowd in.
  • Midday — a brief pause to re-centre on God's presence.
  • Evening — reviewing the day with gratitude and reflection.

Use a Simple Prayer Framework

Structure helps, especially when you're starting out. The classic ACTS framework is a helpful guide:

  1. Adoration — Begin by praising God for who He is, not what He does.
  2. Confession — Be honest about sin, shortcomings, and areas of failure.
  3. Thanksgiving — Name specific things you're grateful for today.
  4. Supplication — Bring your requests for yourself and others.

You don't have to follow this rigidly every day, but having a framework prevents the blank-mind paralysis that can derail prayer time.

Keep a Prayer Journal

Writing down your prayers is a powerful practice for several reasons:

  • It slows your thoughts and brings clarity.
  • It creates a record of prayers God has answered over time.
  • It helps you stay focused rather than wandering mentally.
  • Looking back on old entries builds faith and gratitude.

Your journal doesn't need to be literary or impressive — it's between you and God.

Incorporate Scripture Into Your Prayers

Praying the Bible back to God is one of the most powerful forms of prayer. Take a psalm, a promise, or a passage you're studying and turn its words into your own prayer. Psalm 23, for instance, can become: "Lord, you are my shepherd. Today, help me to lack nothing I truly need. Lead me into green pastures when I'm weary…"

What to Do When You Miss a Day

You will miss days. This is normal and not a reason for shame. The key is to not let one missed day become two, then three. When you miss a day, simply return without guilt. God is not keeping score — He is always ready to meet you when you come.
